Choosing the Perfect Outfits for Your Engagement Session // Midwest Wedding Photographer

Updated: Feb 1

So you've set your session date, picked out a location and now all that's left to do is pick the perfect outfit. Easier said than done, so we've put this post together to help guide you through the process!

Grand Rapids, Michigan, Winter engagement session (Casual outfit)

How many outfits should you bring?

We typically recommend doing 2 outfits.

  • One formal or nicer, think nice flowy dresses and button ups something you feel absolutely beautiful in. We always do nicer outfit first. This allows your to get all dolled up in the comfort of your own home. It's also easier to take it down to a casual look rather than trying to dress up on location.

**Consider bringing a comfortable pair of shoes to walk in then swap out for the photos. Spring can be muddy so something you’re okay with getting messy.

  • And one casual outfit think jeans and a nice Tee. This is the type of outfit you would wear out on a casual date. We recommend avoiding logos as much as possilbe unless there is some meaning behind the chosen logo (maybe you met at a concert and bring shirts to remember that day)

COMFORT IS KEY! Be yourselves, make sure BOTH your outfits best represent you as individuals and as a couple <3

Fabrics to be wary of; Silk, satin, velvet and sequins. Though these are beautiful fabrics in real time, they don't always photograph well, ask your photographer if you're considering something along these lines.

Think about the season

Spring pastel colors are beautiful March-June,

Vibrant summer colors are great June-September

Darker shades for Fall ; Burnt oranges, bugrandy, navy blue, ember, olive green

In the winter royal blues, white, grey, work well.

Neautral colors always work no matter the season! This can be thought of as a minimalist approach.

We do recommend avoiding too many prints. Solid colors typically look best in photos. Make sure you're outfit matches your fiance's!

Accessories are just as important and the clothing!

Bring Props and accessories! Hats, sunglasses, sweaters, blankets, champagne, beer, picnic-style basket etc.

Here at Photo House we are always open to our clients sending pictures of their outfits before a session. This allows us to give any last minute input before the session and this allows our clients to relax a little knowing they've chosen the best outfits for their photoshoot!
